Élise Roy has appeared as a flutist and composer throughout the United States. Her recent electroacoustic works have been selected for performance at Electronic Music Midwest 2013, Electroacoustic Barn Dance 2013, South Carolina State University’s Electroacoustic Concert Series, 2014 inner sOUndscapes, PAS-E in Venice, Italy, 2014 New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, and the 2014 Society for ElectroAcoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) National Conference. Élise was the runner-up in the national 2014 ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission Competition and a finalist in the 2014 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards. Her fixed media work, bas relief (Flutescape I), will appear on the SEAMUS Electroacoustic Miniatures 2013: Negative Space album, available on iTunes in 2014.
As a flutist, in addition to premiering her own works, Élise has premiered works by composers such as Erik Ulman, Kurt Isaacson, Lewis Nielson, Tom Lopez, and Peter Swendsen. In an ensemble setting she has worked with composers Olga Neuwirth, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Huang Ruo. Élise has been featured at the 2013 Chicago Flute Club Festival, performing in duos alongside Molly Barth and Mary-Christine Stingley. She has also appeared on the Bowling Green New Music Festival (OH) multiple times, Poto Arts Festival (CA) alongside cellist Séverine Ballon, the American Innovators Symposium (OH) performing the works of Stuart Saunders Smith, the John Cage Centenary Festival at REDCAT Theater (CA), and The Institute and Festival for Contemporary Performance (NYC).
Élise is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Contemporary Music at Bowling Green State University. She holds a Masters of Fine Arts in flute performance from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Her former flute teachers have included Michel Debost, Kathleen Chastain, Conor Nelson, and Rachel Rudich, in addition to improvisation studies with Vinny Golia. She is also an active improviser and a member of the Black Swamp Underground improvisation collective.
